TallyBoard | Everyday Stuff | My damn dog...

My beautiful, sweet, golden retriever rescue dog, Chloe, is neurotic. She has separation anxiety. Bad. We discovered this after we adopted her last year and left her at home while we went to work. She chewed two rugs, ate a couch cushion, scratched the wall near the back door all to hell. Short of kenneling her all day - we decided to take her to work with us (hubby & I work at the same place). At least this way - we could get out and see her several times a day, take her for walks, etc. It seemed to be working. For almost a year - she's been content in the car. We take her with us wherever we go and she's been doing fine. No damage (can you see where I'm starting to lead you?). This weekend, we went to visit our daughter (about 3 hours from home). Took Chloe with us. It's not the first trip she's been on. We left her in the car while we were visiting the place where Megan volunteers. We weren't gone long (maybe 30 minutes). She (the dog) went into a crazy neurotic frenzy and ripped the upholstery on the back seat so badly that now we're going to have to have it replaced! The car is only a year old! I don't know what got into her, but she was a freak all weekend. When we got home - she was fine. And she's at work with us again today - and she's fine. It's going to cost at least $600 to get the upholstery repaired. I don't know what to do about that dog. 10/30/12 at 01:31 pm EDT

Update: She's been doing fine in the car at work this week. Except today - she got into the upholstery again. Weird. We can't find a pattern for her anxiety. I did order a Thundershirt (www.thundershirt.com). It's used for dogs/cats with anxiety issues. A friend recommended it to me. Hopefully that will help. If not that, then I'll have to talk to the vet about Puppy Prozac, I guess. Anyone else ever use a Thundershirt on their dog? 11/01 at 04:16 pm EDT | reply
